Hermann-Josef Sausen (born January 5, 1950 in Troisdorf ) is a German diplomat . From 2012 to 2015 he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Panama .

Life

Sausen first studied Romance studies and musicology (1968-1970), then economics and graduated in 1976 with a diploma . From 1976 to 1977 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Bonn .

In 1977 Sausen joined the Foreign Service. His first assignment abroad followed in 1981 at the embassy in Bogotá , and in 1984 he was transferred to the German embassy in Kuala Lumpur . From 1987 to 1990 Sausen worked again at the Foreign Office in Bonn and then for three years at the German Embassy in New Delhi . From 1993 to 1997 he headed a work unit in the Foreign Office and then worked at the German Embassy in Vienna (1997–2001), then as a permanent representative at the German Embassy in Jakarta (2001–2004). From 2004 to 2007 Sausen was the representative for environmental and biopolitical issues in foreign policy and from 2007 to 2010 he was envoy and permanent representative at the German embassy in Brasília . From 2010 to 2012 he was the German representative in Reykjavík . He then succeeded Ambassador Michael Grau at the German embassy in Panama. In July 2015, Sausen retired.

Since January 2016 Sausen has been an ambassador a. D. one of the program directors of the International Diplomatic Training (IDP) of the Federal Foreign Office.

Sausen is married and has two children.
