Hermann Sinsheimer Prize
The Hermann Sinsheimer Prize is a German literature prize that has been awarded in odd years by the Palatinate city of Freinsheim ( Rhineland-Palatinate ) since 1983 . It is endowed with 2500 euros. In even years, the city awards the Hermann Sinsheimer plaque . Both awards commemorate the Jewish writer, theater critic and journalist Hermann Sinsheimer (1883–1950), who was born in Freinsheim . He had to flee to England during the Nazi era ; two of his siblings were victims of the Holocaust .
Those honored are not necessarily recognized as literary figures , but primarily because of their services to literature . The awards were initiated by Gert Weber (1927–2010). In 2006, at the 4th award, he was honored for his life's work with the Hermann Sinsheimer plaque. Klaus Bähr (1938–2020), mayor for 28 years, was co-initiator and chairman of the jury from the start. In 2009 he received the Federal Cross of Merit for 60 years of political and cultural commitment, later the golden badge of honor of the association and the honorary citizenship of the city.
