Hermann Oestrich

Hermann Oestrich (born December 30, 1903 in Beeckerwerth ; † April 2, 1973 in Paris ) was a Franco-German engineer . As an employee of BMW and later the SNECMA, he was significantly involved in the development of jet engines .

After school, Oestrich studied at the universities of Hanover and Berlin . After completing his studies, he first went to the German Aviation Research Institute in 1926 , where he stayed until he switched to the Brandenburg Motor Works in 1935 . In 1936 these works went to BMW .

In 1937 Oestrich did his doctorate in Berlin at the TH Berlin-Charlottenburg and became chief engineer at BMW, in 1938 also authorized representative. In the course of the new development of jet engines , Oestrich began research in this area. In 1939 he was appointed head of jet engine development at the BMW plant in Berlin-Spandau. His developments eventually led to the BMW 003 engine, which was bought by the French Ministry of Aviation in 1946. In 1940 Oestrich was granted power of attorney, became department director in 1943 and took over the management of gas turbine development.

After the Second World War , Oestrich was initially taken prisoner and was interrogated for a long time on technical issues. Eventually he was offered a job in the United States, which he declined.

Oestrich decided, however, together with other former BMW employees, such as B. Hans-Georg Münzberg , August Wilhelm Quick, Otto David to accept a five-year contract from the French Ministry of Aviation, which was to be carried out for the French Snecma in the former Dornier works in Lindau-Rickenbach in the French zone of occupation and the further development of the BMW 003 engine bought by France. There he founded ATAR (Atelier aéronautique de Rickenbach) and headed this development group of 120 employees. He therefore went to Decize in 1946 , where he officially worked for the wholly owned SNECMA subsidiary Aeroplanes Voisin . Oestrich and his team worked on the further development of the ATAR 101 . In 1948 he acquired French citizenship and in 1950 he was promoted to technical director of SNECMA in Villaroche, where the further developed BMW 003 engine was installed.

For his services to the development of the Atar engine, he was knighted in the Legion of Honor in 1962 .
