Hermann Alverdes

Hermann Karl Otto Alverdes (born May 14, 1871 in Schlawe ; † November 26, 1934 in Düsseldorf ) was a German general director of an insurance company and author of an autobiographical book about the Herero uprising .

Life

Hermann Alverdes came from an old Pomeranian family and was the second eldest son of Franz Alverdes and his wife Ottilie nee Wietzke. After attending school, he embarked on a military career and became a sergeant and supplies applicant at the imperial provisions office in Strasbourg . With the imperial protection force , Hermann Alverdes came to German South West Africa in 1903 and took part in the genocide of the Herero and Nama in the following year . Due to illness, Alverdes returned to the German Reich in 1904 and, under the impression of his experiences, wrote the autobiographical book Mein Tagebuch aus Südwest. Memories from the campaign against the Hottentots , Oldenburg & Leipzig, Stalling, 1906. Hermann Alverdes dedicated this book to the German people and their brave sons who fell in the South West African field!

In 1912 he was director of Deutsche Rückversicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft Düsseldorf and most recently director general and board member of Düsseldorfer Rückversicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft. The latter Rückversicherungs-AG emerged in 1933 by renaming from the Düsseldorfer Lloyd Versicherungs-AG.

He lived in Düsseldorf, Grafenberger Allee 394 and was the recipient of several high awards.

Hermann Alverdes was married to Paula, née Arnold (1870–1942) and had several children, including the writer Paul Alverdes . Hermann Alverdes was buried in the north cemetery in Düsseldorf.
