Hermann August Freiherr von Münchhausen (born June 5, 1856 in Bodenwerder , † January 9, 1922 in Bockstadt ) was a German landowner and horse breeder. He was the son of the manor owner Alexander Freiherr von Münchhausen . Münchhausen was a member of the Prussian military and retired from service as a lieutenant colonel . Then he went to America and met his wife Annette (née Estep) there. In 1885 the couple married in New York City , but then returned to Germany. The two had five daughters together.

After his return, Münchhausen acquired the Bockstadt manor in 1888. After the ownership structure in Bockstadt had changed almost annually in the 17th and 18th centuries, the development of the estate and village in Bockstadt under the influence of the von Münchhausen family, especially in the social area, developed positively for the circumstances at the time. Münchhausen established a stud there . In addition to the 38 hectares of pasture area, this included a stud's own gallop track and a riding arena. Baron von Münchhausen bred the most successful horses of his time. He was particularly famous for breeding English thoroughbred horses . His commitment to thoroughbred breeding and sport was unselfish. He always put his actions in the service of the cause, also as a board member of the racing club for Central Germany, founded in 1879 and based in Gotha .

At the end of the 19th century, Freiherr von Münchhausen commissioned the architect Karl Behlert to build the new palace. After about four years of construction, a spacious building in the Scottish country house style was created, surrounded by parks, avenues and ponds.

Since Münchhausen had no son, his line of the Münchhausen family died out with him.
