Hermann Bärwald (also Hermann Baerwald ; born November 7, 1828 in Nakel an der Netze ; † February 19, 1907 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German educator and author.

Life

Hermann Bärwald was born in November 1828 in Nakel an der Netze in Posen as the son of the Jewish businessman Levin Baerwald. Hermann was first taught by private tutors and then switched to high school in Conitz . He then attended the Elisabeth High School in Breslau . He received his school leaving certificate in 1850. Baerwald studied philology and history at the University of Breslau until the winter of 1852 and then went to the Humboldt University in Berlin . He was particularly influenced by Leopold Ranke , who taught in Berlin. In 1855 Baerwald received his doctorate with a thesis on "The election of King Rudolf I of Habsburg". In 1856 Baerwald passed the examination for a higher teaching post. Due to the restrictive regulations, however, he could not be accepted into the state school service as a Jew. Baerwald then became tutor for the children of the Prussian consul Moritz Ritter von Goldschmidt in Vienna . In addition, he devoted himself to research into medieval history in 1856 and 1857 and came into close contact with Ottokar Lorenz (historian) and Karl Friedrich Stumpf-Brentano (1829–1882). For one of his publications he received the Austrian gold medal for art and science.

In 1859 he became a member of the teaching staff of the religious school of the Jewish community in Berlin and of the Jewish teacher training institute. In this function, a close exchange with Michael Sachs (rabbi) developed . During his time in Berlin, Bärwald also had close contact with the national liberal politician Eduard Lasker . Bärwald rendered outstanding services to the foundation and reform of the Jewish education system.

After Sigismund Stern's death in December 1867, he succeeded Eduard Lasker and Berthold Auerbach as director at Philanthropin . He took up his position in August 1868. He headed the secondary school until his retirement at the end of 1899. His endeavors aimed in particular at the equal treatment of the philanthropist with other public schools as well as the subordination to the state school supervision and away from the supervision by the city of Frankfurt am Main. During his tenure, the Philanthropin was expanded into a nine-grade secondary school.

Bärwald concentrated in particular on his work at the school and had less impact on the city of Frankfurt than his predecessor. Nevertheless, he founded the national liberal electoral association in Frankfurt. In 1868 he joined the Frankfurt Masonic lodge, "Zur Aufstieg Morgenröthe", which was mainly visited by citizens of the Jewish faith. Since the 1870s he was head of the Alliance Israélite Universelle committee .

At the end of his tenure as director of the Philanthropin, the number of students fell significantly, which led to a considerable financial burden on the Jewish community that supported the school. Bärwald submitted an extensive memorandum on the preservation of the school and thus secured the preservation of the school.

Hermann Bärwald died in February 1907 at the age of 78 in Frankfurt am Main.

Hermann Bärwald's son, Paul Baerwald , emigrated to the USA around 1890 to become an investment banker. He was a co-founder in 1914 of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and namesake of today at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem settled Paul Baerwald School of Social Work .
