Hermann Albert Behr (born April 7, 1875 in Stuttgart , † April 8, 1947 in Berlin ) was a German composer , conductor , conductor and violinist .

life and work

He was born as the son of interior designer Carl Behr and his wife Lina Behr, b. Zenegg, born in Stuttgart. In 1881 the family moved to Mainz. Born in 1876 and died in 1959 in Soregno, Lugano (Canton Ticino), Switzerland, the singer (alto) and singing teacher Therese Behr-Schnabel was his younger sister. The art sculptor Hermann Behr in Rostock , after whom he was named, was his grandfather.

After attending grammar school in Mainz, Hermann Behr studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, after which he went to the Royal Conservatory in Brussels . In 1899 Hermann Behr became concert master of the city orchestra in Essen . Two years later he got a job as Kapellmeister at the Breslau Orchestra Association, which later became the Silesian State Orchestra and the Silesian Philharmonic. In 1936 he became regional director of the Reich Chamber of Music in Breslau and later also for Lower Silesia . At the end of the Second World War he left Breslau and lived in Berlin for the last few years.

In 1929, Hermann Behr also became the Bundeschormeister of the Silesian Singers' Association. He was a member of the German Singers Association and played a key role in the preparation of the 13th Singers Association Festival in Breslau in 1937.

He composed a symphony in E minor, the string quartet in A minor and several songs that he wrote for male choirs.

Hermann Behr married Maria nee Waldorf. The children Carl (1902–1934) and Carola (* 1912) emerged from the marriage.
