Hermann Robert Catumby Hirzel (born July 6, 1864 in Buenos Aires , Argentina , † June 7, 1939 in Berlin ) was a pharmacist and painter, etcher , graphic artist and draftsman of Swiss origin.

Life

He was the son of the Winterthur merchant Julius Hirzel (approx. 1824– ??) and Linda von Schmidt (approx. 1828–1917). After attending school in Geneva , Hirzel did an apprenticeship as a pharmacist, but then studied chemistry and natural sciences at the universities in Geneva and Berlin . In Berlin, however, he decided at the end of the 1880s to drop out of studies and become a painter. He took courses at the Berlin Art Academy , but also continued his self-didactic training with the advice of the painter Karl Hagemeister , for whom he designed an ex-libris (see illustration). He was influenced by the natural landscapes of the Mark Brandenburg , but also went on study trips to Sicily and the Campagna Romana in 1890 .

As a special means of expression, he chose etching, the technique of which he had acquired himself. In 1893 he received the silver medal for his etching exhibited at the "International Art Exhibition" in Rome . In the same year he moved to Berlin, where his work again specialized in motifs from the Brandenburg landscape. In 1904 he went to Russia - probably for financial reasons - to work as a cotton seller. In 1910 he returned to Berlin, where he a. a. as a commercial artist earned his money and took up pen art .
