Athletic career

In the summer of 1961, Hermann John, junior player at SC Aufbau Magdeburg , was accepted into the squad of the GDR junior national team. In 1961 he played two internationals with the junior team, then he moved to Dynamo Dresden and made another five international junior matches. He was called up in both midfield and attack and scored a goal.

Although he was already entitled to play for the men’s division in the 1961/62 season, John did not play for the GDR league team at Dynamo Dresden. At the beginning of the 1962/63 season he moved to SC Dynamo Berlin , the top club of the Dynamo sports association. There he played only three league games. First, coach János Gyarmati put him on the 2nd and 3rd matchday as a striker on the right winger, then he tried it with John again on the 20th matchday in the same position, after which John's league career was already over.

Between 1963 and 1966, John played three seasons at the East Berlin branch of SC Dynamo, SG Dynamo Hohenschönhausen , in the second-rate GDR league . Of the 90 played point games, he played 54 games and scored eight goals. After SG Dynamo had to relegate in 1966, John joined the East Berlin GDR league promoted SG Lichtenberg 47 . There, too, he was not part of the regular player base, as he was only called up 49 times in the 90 league games (3 goals). After three seasons, the Lichtenberger were relegated from the GDR league in 1969, and for Hermann John it was the final end in higher-class football.
