Hermann Klaue (born August 30, 1912 in Schöningen ; † November 1, 2001 in Villeneuve VD in Switzerland ) was a German engineer and inventor.

Life

Klaue lived in Schöningen until 1932 and then moved to Nussdorf on Lake Constance.

The engineer with a doctorate mainly dealt with vehicle technology and filed around 800 patents in his life . The engineer has driven numerous developments, especially in the field of bicycle construction.

But Klaue also succeeded in making an important invention in the field of brake technology: as part of his doctoral thesis, he developed the full-lined disc brake, which was patented in 1939. This development was later carried out by Argus Motoren Gesellschaft , which u. a. supplied to the fighter aircraft industry. It was used on the Arado Ar 96 and, from 1942, in the VI Tiger armored vehicle . The project for the E-25 (Jaguar) tank destroyer was developed at Argus in Karlsruhe under the direction of Klaue until 1945.

In 1949 the company moved to Überlingen . There he founded the Klaue development and test laboratory and soon turned it into Klaue-Bremse GmbH Überlingen . The company was engaged in the design and manufacture of bicycles with advanced technology. For example, the disc brake encapsulated in a hub and a light metal frame made of cast silumin were developed.

In 1952 he developed a long-thought-out concept of the small passenger car with front-wheel drive and transverse engine over the front axle. This concept was later adopted by Alec Issigonis, who designed the "Mini" in 1957 for BMC.

In the 1950s, Klaue moved his residence to Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

At the beginning of the 1960s, Heinrich Nordhoff and Klaue met. From this meeting the change from the "VW Beetle" to the VW Golf (1965) was initiated.
