Hermann Müri

Hermann Müri (born August 14, 1874 in Schinznach-Dorf , † April 26, 1938 in Turgi ) was a Swiss trade unionist and politician ( SP ). He is considered one of the pioneers of the labor movement in the canton of Aargau and represented the SP in the National Council from 1919 to 1938 .

biography

Müri lost his father at an early age. His mother could not care for him, he came as Verdingkind on the farm Strohegg in Wildegg , where he had to do farm work. In 1890 he began an apprenticeship as a tailor in Lenzburg . Two and a half years later he went on a journey that took him to Germany . There he came into contact with the labor movement and in 1894 joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany . Back in Switzerland in 1898 he was given the opportunity to work for the electrical engineering company Brown, Boveri & Cie. to complete a second apprenticeship as a winder in Baden . He worked as a factory worker for the next nine years and during this time he was responsible for educating and organizing the workforce in the Baden region.

In 1907 Müri was elected the first workers secretary of the canton of Aargau - an activity he carried out for the next three decades. His political career began in 1909 when he was elected to the local council of his municipality in Turgi . There he was voted out of office in 1921, but four years later he managed to move back in. From 1931 he served as mayor . Also in 1909 he was elected to the Aargau Grand Council . In the cantonal parliament, he was the first to demand that the shops close by law . In 1926/27 he was President of the Grand Council.

In 1917, Müri ran for election to the National Council, but was unsuccessful because of the majority voting system that was still in use at the time. In 1919, when proportional representation was first used, he succeeded in entering the National Council . In parliament, he mainly campaigned for work safety . Also in 1919 Müri took over the office of president of the Aargau SP cantonal party. He was also represented on the board of the Swiss SP and a committee member of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions . In 1938 he died of a heart attack.
