Hermann Maria Wette , completely Hermann-Maria Eduard Wette , (born February 9, 1900 in Cologne , † 1982 ) was a German musicologist, composer and painter.

Life

Wette was the seventh child of the doctor and writer Hermann Wette and the lyricist of the opera Hansel and Gretel Adelheid Wette , née Humperdinck. Even as a teenager, he was in correspondence with Arnold Mendelssohn through his father's acquaintance with Arnold Mendelssohn .

Wette studied at the Mannheim University of Music with Ernst Toch , who also made sure that pieces by Nikolai Lopatnikoff , Kurt Spanich , Trude Rittmann , Wette and other of his students were brought into the Mannheim society. He composed numerous works. In 1929 Wilhelm Bopp wrote in the June issue of the monthly Die Musik on the occasion of Wette's debut in Mannheim :

“On an evening organized by Hermann Maria Wette , Engelbert Humperdinck's nephew , we are told that a piano sonata, a violin solo sonata, a motet for mixed choir and songs for a deep female voice expressly, seriously and consistently express commitment to new music revealed. As with so many others from recent times, all ties that could still tie to the past epoch are loosened, the law of Wettean music is the law of an older past and a new future at the same time. "

- Wilhelm Bopp

When Max von Pauer became head of the newly founded Municipal University for Music and Theater in Mannheim in the autumn of 1933 , he was appointed to teach at this school together with Johann Eckart and Rudolf Boruvka. Wette was later director of the Saarland University of Music .

From his marriage to his wife Gertrud Wette, b. Egli (1910–2002), a doctor of dentistry practicing in Mannheim, had four sons, including the biologist and statistician Reimut Wette (1927–1997) and the historian Wolfram Wette (* 1940). Parts of his music manuscripts are in the collection of the music department of the Bavarian State Library in Munich.
