Dark Skies - They are among us (Original title: Dark Skies ) is an American horror film from 2013 . Directed by Scott Stewart.

action

The Barrett family lives in a typical small US town. Father Daniel became unemployed in the wake of the economic crisis, so mother Lacy has to look after the family on her own, which repeatedly leads to tensions. The family also includes the older son Jesse and the younger son Sammy. The sons enjoy a happy childhood. Every evening they communicate between their rooms via walkie-talkie .

One day strange events around the family begin to pile up. For example, objects are moved around the house, the alarm goes off for no apparent reason, and strange marks appear on the children's bodies. Sammy paints a picture that shows the family, tall, slender gray beings, and the family members experience sleepwalking situations that they cannot remember later. Daniel installs surveillance cameras. One night, Lacy is woken up by Sammy's screams and sees three gray figures standing by his bed on the surveillance monitor as she storms into his room, but nothing can be seen of them.

Lacy tries to explain what happened on the internet and comes across reports of alien abductions . Together with Daniel she visits Edwin Pollard, a local ufologist. He tells them about the so-called "horrors" : extraterrestrials who infiltrate families and then kidnap a chosen person. The chosen one is always the person with whom the grays first contacted. Based on the painted pictures, the Barretts assume that they are after Sammy.

Daniel gets a gun, and the family gets a sheepdog for protection. On the evening of July 4th, events escalate. Lights and televisions flicker, and a glaring glow envelops the house. Jesse gets hallucinations in which he sees the death of his parents and finally walks up to the horrors that have become visible. Lacy and Daniel are unable to intervene and Jesse disappears in a flash of lightning.

A few months later, Lacy, Daniel and Sammy move into a smaller apartment. While unpacking the moving boxes, Lacy discovers a drawing by Jesse on which he had also painted the grays. However, since this picture was taken long before Sammy's, they realize that Jesse was the chosen one of the gray from the start. When Sammy gets one of the walkie talkies out of a box, it switches on and Jesse's voice can be heard.

Robert Cherkowski draws the conclusion that Dark Skies is "not a nuisance, but still a completely personality-free, smooth and rather harmless horror snap shot". Moviebreak.de sees parallels to the Poltergeist films and to Signs and describes Dark Skies as a “more upscale, competently chiseled genre flic”, which is nevertheless “not particularly enriching” and does not come out above “upper average”. The horror magazine finds "actors and dramaturgy convince [d]", praises the "intelligent approach" of the film plot and concludes that Dark Skies is a "coherent and lousy exciting horror thriller about a visit of a special kind".

production
