Gray ( Engl. Gray ) is a term for a hypothetical humanoid creatures. It is said to be of extraterrestrial origin and is associated with the UFO phenomenon and alien abduction in both science fiction and non -fiction . The first description of a gray is considered to be that of the couple Betty and Barney Hill, who, according to their own statements, were kidnapped by aliens in a UFO and subjected to several medical experiments in 1961 . Betty Hill's description does not match most of the later descriptions.

Physical characteristics

The descriptions and representations of a gray are different. In publications about it, three types have been roughly reported. All three types are humanoid in shape. The most frequently described features are a larger head than humans with large, almond-shaped , deep black eyes, two breathing holes and ear openings without auricles . Their mouths should be narrow and lipless and their teeth should not be visible at first glance. In terms of physique, Grays are described as about four feet tall and with thin, long limbs, each with four or five fingers. The American conspiracy theorist Milton William Cooper (1943-2001) also reported about evil grays with big noses, which he confronted with tall, blonde aliens of Aryan appearance. Although he always distanced himself from any hostility towards Jews , he took up racial anti- Semitic stereotypes and made his ufological conspiracy theories compatible with right-wing extremists.

History of the phenomenon

Comparison: Gray - human

The description of little gray creatures first appeared in science fiction literature in 1891 in the book Meda: A Tale of the Future by Kenneth Folingsby. In 1883, HG Wells published the article Man of the Year Million, which describes how humanity will develop in the future in beings with gray skin and large heads.

According to newspaper reports, the alleged kidnapping of the American couple Betty and Barney Hill first generated international interest in 1965. According to press reports, the couple alleged at the time that they were stopped by extraterrestrial creatures while driving and dragged through the forest into a UFO shaped like a flying saucer . According to their own statements, they were subjected to several medical experiments. The couple reported about this only several years after hypnosis , during which they described their perceptions in great detail. The appearance described by the Hills differs significantly from the shape known today, in particular the eyes are significantly smaller and more similar to those of humans. The first alleged kidnapping, in which the description of the creatures corresponds to the ideas of today, was probably that of Betty Andreasson.

Among other things, Betty Hill described a star map allegedly shown to her, which, according to an analysis, represents the star system Zeta Reticuli . This interpretation by the amateur astronomer Marjorie Fish has never been scientifically confirmed. The name gray did not establish itself until years later. In the years that followed, Grays were also described by other alleged kidnapping victims.

In the early 1980s, they were associated with the so-called Roswell incident , because some first-time testimony spoke of the removal of small, gray beings from the crash site by the US military . The statements were published in several non-fiction books and newspaper articles.

In 1987, the American writer Whitley Strieber published the book Communion (English: The Visitors ), in which he describes abductions by Grays and other extraterrestrial beings. The book was made into a film two years later with the title The Visitors with Christopher Walken in the lead role.
