Hermann Meinhard Poppen (printer)

Hermann Meinhard Poppen (* 1796 in Aurich ; † November 1, 1881 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German printer and entrepreneur .

Life

Poppen trained as a printer at the Tapper printing company. In 1815 he was wounded in the battle of Ligny . Later he worked again as a printer in Heidelberg and from 1829 in Freiburg.

In 1846 he took over the Groos brothers' company and, with his son Eduard, founded the printing company and the publishing house " HM Poppen & Sohn ". In 1850 he acquired the "Haus zum Pfirsichbaum" in Freiburg as a production facility. The publisher published, among others, writings by Alexander Braun (1849/1850), Theodor Bergk (1854), Julius Neßler (1856), Karl Heinrich Baumgärtner (1857), Ignaz Schwörer (1857), Johann Heinrich Jacob Müller (1858), Alban Stolz (1859) and Jacob Venedey (1864).

In 1863, Hermann Meinhard Poppen acquired the publishing rights for the Freiburger Zeitung from the city of Freiburg . After the death of Hermann Meinhard Poppen, the son Eduard Poppen continued the company; In 1893 Maximilian Gottfried Ortmann, who had previously managed a printing company in Würzburg, joined the company. In 1918 it was renamed the university printing and publishing company " Poppen & Ortmann ".

Hermann Meinhard Poppen was accepted into the Freiburg Freemasons' lodge Zur noble Aussicht in 1848 .
