Hermann Nicolai (diplomat)

Hermann Nicolai (* 1959 ) is a German diplomat . He has been Ambassador to Niger since September 2018 .

Life

After graduating from high school, Hermann Nicolai studied political science and Islamic studies in Tübingen, Paris and Damascus . After completing his studies, he trained as an editor at the German School of Journalism in Munich in 1987 and worked in the Bonn office of the AFP news agency until 1989 .

Nicolai is married and has 3 grown children.

career

In 1989 Hermann Nicolai joined the Foreign Service . After completing the preparatory service for the higher foreign service, the first assignments followed in the Foreign Office in Bonn as well as in Pakistan , Oman and Bangladesh . From 2005 to 2009 he was Deputy Head of the Working Group on Global Issues at the Federal Foreign Office and during this time in 2006 worked for six months as a political advisor in the Working Group on Avian Influenza and Pandemic Preparedness of the United Nations in New York.

From April 2009 Nicolai spent several years in Afghanistan , first as civilian head of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Kunduz , then as head of the ISAF Stability Division and then again as civilian head of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in Kunduz and at the same time as head of the Kunduz branch of the German Embassy in Kabul. After completing his assignment in Afghanistan, Nicolai returned to the Federal Foreign Office in 2011 and worked as Head of Unit for Political Issues in the United Nations Department . At the end of 2014, he moved to the Syrian opposition in Istanbul and Gaziantep as envoy for Syria and representative of the Foreign Office .

Hermann Nicolai has been the German ambassador to Niger since September 2018 , based in Niamey .
