Hermann Raich SVD (born May 2, 1934 in Jerzens , Tyrol , Austria ; † October 9, 2009 in Wabag , Papua New Guinea ) was bishop of the Wabag diocese in the highlands of Papua New Guinea.

Life

After graduating from high school, Hermann Raich joined the religious order of the Steyler Missionaries in St. Gabriel , Maria Enzersdorf south of Vienna . After studying theology, he was ordained a priest on April 29, 1962 and went on a mission . From 1964 he was active in Papua New Guinea in the construction of churches , particularly in the province of Enga .

In 1982 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as the first bishop of the Wabag diocese , a suffragan of the Mount Hagen archdiocese . He received his episcopal ordination on April 29, 1982, the Archbishop of Mount Hagen, George Elmer Bernarding SVD; Co - consecrators were Francesco De Nittis , Apostolic Pro-Nuncio of Papua New Guinea, and Raymond Rodly Caesar SVD, Bishop of Goroka in Papua New Guinea.

Pope Benedict XVI agreed to retire due to age and health reasons in 2008. He died after a long illness and was buried at the house of the Divine Word Missionaries in Par, Papua New Guinea.

Bishop Raich was held in high regard in Papua New Guinea; a postage stamp was dedicated to him on his retirement.
