Hermann Moses Robinow (born March 31, 1837 in Hamburg ; † July 27, 1922 Hamburg) was a Hamburg merchant and member of parliament.

Life

Robinow was born the son of the businessman Siegmund Robinow (1808-1870) and Therese Diesseldorf. His grandfather, Marcus Robinow, immigrated to Hamburg from Leszno in 1790 , had successfully established himself and married Emma Beit .

Robinow grew up in Hamburg and from 1845 to 1847 attended Dr. Schleiden and then received private tuition from private tutors. From 1849 to 1851 Robinow attended the six-class secondary school in Erfurt together with his brother Johannes . In 1852 Robinow began a three-year apprenticeship with the banker Ferdinand Jacobson . He then worked in the company of his uncle Robinow & Majoribanks in Leith and received power of attorney in 1857 .

Company formation

Robinow's father Siegmund was originally a partner in the company M. Robinow & Sons in Hamburg ; after the latter had become insolvent in 1849, he had become a Hamburg agent for CI Hambro & Son , London and a partner in the Elbkupferwerk in 1851 . Then in 1855 he took over the management of the Elbzuckersiederei, then was for Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & Sohn and took over the management of the Reiherstieg shipyard in 1858 . Since Siegmund Robinow wanted to work for his own account again, he decided to go into business again with his eldest son.

Robinow founded the company Siegmund Robinow & Son in Hamburg on July 1, 1859 together with his father Siegmund . In 1861 the brother Johannes Robinow joined the company, in 1873 the brother Carl too. The company Siegmund Robinow & Sohn developed favorably and became one of the largest trading houses in Hamburg at that time, in 1914 they had around 60 employees. From 1885 the company was based in the Dovenhof .

Robinow was involved in various voluntary work in various offices in Hamburg. He was a member of the Commerzdeputation Presidium for over 30 years . From 1903 on Robinow was a member of the board of directors of the General German Trade Conference . From 1895 to 1907 Robinow belonged to the Hamburg citizenship . Robinow was a member of the supervisory board of the Norddeutsche Bank .

Robinow married Flora May (1845-1891) in 1865, Walter Robinow was his son.

Others

One of the rose varieties bred by Peter Lambert bears the name Hermann Robinow in honor of Robinow.
