Live and act

Hermann Vöchting made significant contributions to the morphology of shoot plants (cormophytes) and discovered the polarity between shoot and root.

He was born as the son of Friedrich Vöchting in Blomberg, Lippe . His father was the head of the famous Blomberg carnation farm. The phrase "city of carnations", which is still used today, goes back to him. Hermann received many suggestions from his father that would shape him for his later life. After successfully completing the Blomberg Rector School, he completed an apprenticeship as a gardener at the princely court gardener in Detmold .

In the course of his training, he realized that the gardening profession would not be enough for him intellectually. So Hermann Vöchting went to Berlin and began studying mathematics and natural sciences. He moved to Göttingen to do his doctorate and wrote his doctoral thesis on the Rhipsalidaceae , a South American epiphytic plant family. From 1874 to 1878 Vöchting worked as a research assistant at the University of Bonn . During this time he also looked after the botanical garden.

But he soon received a reputation that was important for his career: he became a professor at the University of Basel . His final place of work was to be Tübingen . There he worked from 1887 as head of the University's Botanical Institute. He soon drew attention to himself through remarkable research results and significant scientific work and was one of the leading bioscientists of his time. Vöchting was one of the co-founders of plant physiology : The focus of research was no longer on the structure of the plant, but on the functions and metabolism.

With increasing age, health problems (heart problems) became noticeable. Hermann Vöchting died in Tübingen on November 24, 1917.
