Hermann Vogelstein

Hermann Vogelstein (born January 8, 1870 in Pilsen , Austria-Hungary ; died September 28, 1942 in exile in New York ) was a German rabbi. In his time he was the leading liberal rabbi in Germany.

Life

Vogelstein studied oriental languages at the universities of Berlin and Breslau and at the same time at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau and at the Institute for the Science of Judaism in Berlin. In 1894 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD.

He subsequently served as a preacher and rabbinical administrator in Opole (1895–1897), as a rabbi in Königsberg (1897–1920) and Breslau (1920–1938).

Like his father, he was a staunch opponent of the national Jewish movement.

In 1938 he emigrated to England and in 1939 to the USA .

Together with Paul Rieger he wrote the standard work History of the Jews in Rome (2 volumes, Berlin 1895–96, English 1940).

His other writings include, among others, Agriculture in Palestine at the time of the Mishnah - Der Getreidebau (Berlin 1894); The beginnings of the Talmud and the emergence of Christianity (Königsberg 1902); Contributions to the history of teaching in the Jewish community in Königsberg in Prussia (1903); The isr. Association for nursing and burial Chewra kaddischa zu Königsberg in Prussia (1904); Military items from the Israelite royal era (1906); On the prehistory of the law on the conditions of the Jews of July 23, 1847 (1909).

Hermann Vogelstein was the first son of Heinemann Vogelstein and brother of Ludwig and Theodor Vogelstein and Julie Braun-Vogelstein .
