Hermann von Brevern , born as Hermann Brever (* July 20, 1663 in Riga , † July 3, 1721 in St. Petersburg ) was a German-Baltic lawyer.

Life

Brevern was the son of superintendent Johannes Brever in Riga. He attended high school in Riga and from 1683 studied law at Altdorf University . In 1686 he took a trip to Jena and then visited various royal courts. His Grand Tour took him to Vienna, Hungary, Italy, France and the Netherlands. Because of an illness he could not start the planned continuation to England. Brevern returned to Riga in 1691 and became an assessor at the regional court in 1693, president of the castle court in 1696, and assessor at the court court in 1701. During the Great Northern War he was temporarily the deputy of the absent governor of Strohkirch , but then had to flee to Lübeck for a long time . After the occupation of Riga by the Russians, Peter I appointed him vice-president of the Livonian court in 1711. From 1717 he was also Vice President of the Imperial Judicial College in St. Petersburg.

His son Johann von Brevern, born in 1695, also became a member of the Imperial Court in Riga and died in 1735. A coat of arms with an inscription in the Petrikirche commemorates him .

Awards

Hermann Brever was raised to the nobility in October 1694. The von Brevern family resided in the Baltic States until 1939. The property included the Altenhof and Mardu estates. A branch of his descendants was elevated to the rank of count under the name of Brevern de la Gardie .
