Karl Hermann von Brevern ( Russian : Карл фон Бреверн * October 22, 1704 in Riga ; † January 3, 1744 in Saint Petersburg ) came from the German-Baltic aristocratic family of the Brevern . He was in Russia's services cabinet member, diplomat and president of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg.

Life

Karl Hermann von Brevern, nickname Karl, was the son of Hermann von Brevern (1663–1721), born as Hermann Brever, and his wife Katharina geb. von Reutern (1679–1746). He studied in Königsberg in 1719 and later was a member of the college at the School for Foreign Affairs in Saint Petersburg. In 1726 he became legation secretary in Stockholm . From 1731 to 1734 he accompanied the royal envoy Count von Löwenwolde on diplomatic missions to Vienna , Dresden and Berlin . In 1734 he became permanent secretary and was from 1735 to 1740 chancellery in the cabinet of the Russian Empress Anna (1730–1740). He left the Cabinet as His Majesty's Privy Councilor and was President of the Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg from 1740 to 1744.

In 1741 he was on the overthrow of the Russian Tsar Ivan VI. (1740–1741) participated and made herself available to the new Empress Elisabeth (1741–1761). He was co-author of the Manifesto on the change of throne and in 1741 became a member of the Conference of Ministers for Foreign Affairs. Together with Vice Chancellor Alexei Petrovich Bestuschew, he advocated the Russian-Austrian-English alliance and was a prominent figure in Russian foreign policy until his death in 1744 . In 1740 he married Amalia Dorothea Freiin von Keyserlingk from the House of Okten in Courland , who served Empress Anna as lady-in-waiting. The marriage remained childless.
