Hermann von Guttenberg
Hermann von Guttenberg (born January 13, 1881 in Trieste , † June 8, 1969 in Rostock ) was an Austro-German professor of botany. His areas of study were plant anatomy, morphology and plant physiology.
Life
Hermann von Guttenberg was the son of the state forest inspector Knight Hermann von Guttenberg and his wife Ludmilla, née Plachetka. In 1899 he passed the Abitur in Graz and then did military service as a one-year volunteer. From 1900 to 1904 he studied natural sciences with a focus on botany at the universities of Vienna and Graz. In 1904 he received his doctorate in Graz. phil. with the work contributions to the physiological anatomy of the mushroom gall . From 1904 he was an assistant at the botanical institutes of the universities in Graz and Leipzig. In 1908 he completed his habilitation in Leipzig on the subject of anatomical-physiological studies on the evergreen leaves of the Mediterranean flora .
During the First World War , Guttenberg served in the Austrian army from 1915 to 1918. In 1919 he was appointed associate professor for plant physiology at the University of Berlin, before he was appointed full professor for botany at the University of Rostock in 1923 . When he was awarded the Buitenzorg Scholarship , he undertook study trips to Ceylon , Java , Sumatra and Bali from 1928 to 1929 . Guttenberg worked in the Botanical Institute and for the Botanical Garden in Rostock . From 1923 to 1957, with a brief interruption, he held the post of director of the institute. From 1926 Hermann von Guttenberg was co-editor of Planta. Archive for scientific botany and from 1954 the botanical studies .
Since 1922 Hermann von Guttenberg was with the sculptor Hertha von Guttenberg , nee. Cornilsen, married.
