Hermann von der Pfordten (born July 5, 1857 in Munich , † November 18, 1933 in Munich) was a German classical philologist and musicologist .

Life

Ludwig Hermann Freiherr von der Pfordten belonged to a Bavarian civil servant family. His father was the lawyer and politician Ludwig von der Pfordten . The mother, Adelgunde, née Marx (1823–1873), was the daughter of the businessman and banker Adalbert Fr. Marx in Leipzig. Hermann grew up with his siblings Kurt (1847–1907), Otto , Elisabeth and Helene (Nelly) in Munich. The lawyer Theodor von der Pfordten was a cousin.

Hermann von der Pfordten passed the Abitur examination at Munich's Maximiliansgymnasium in 1874 , with Eugen Albert , Theodor Henkel , Karl Emich Graf von Leiningen-Westerburg , Max Planck and Anton Riemerschmid , among others . He studied classical philology and musicology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the University of Leipzig , received his doctorate in classical philology in 1878, and since 1882 has taught as a private lecturer in the history of music at the Faculty of Philosophy in Munich. In 1906 he received the title and rank of associate professor. His students are named: the violinist Alfred Pellegrini (1887–1962) and the composers Friedrich Mecke (1890–1965), Eugen Auerbach (1898–1944) and Ivo Cruz (1901–1985). After initially a few works on the Greek language, Hermann von der Pfordten published in the field of music history.

In 1882 he acquired the homeland rights in Munich and married Marie Vetter from Würzburg (born June 25, 1857).
