history

Herne Hill and Half Moon Lane in 1823

Today's city Herne Hills was part of the manor Manor of Milkwell . In 1783 the timber merchant Samuel Sanders bought the land and divided it up into large plots, which he then leased to wealthy families. The name Herne Hill did not appear in the documents until 1789. There are several speculations about its origin. It is speculated, for example, that the name goes back to the brothers George and Benjamin Herne, who lived in this area in the 17th century. It is also assumed that the name derives from the herons ( heron in English ) that nested on the nearby River Effra . The development continued and by the middle of the 19th century the area between Herne Hill Junction and Denmark Hill had become one of the most popular and expensive residential areas in London. Over time, the settlement structure changed to a bourgeois quarter.

On the morning of August 7, 2013, a water pipe burst in Half Moon Lane and large parts of the city area were flooded. The water pipe burst was the fault of the water utility Thames Water and caused approximately £ 4 million damage.
