General

In earlier times there were many mills on both sides of the Saale . The Herrenmühle in Weißenfels is one of the few remaining mills. The origins as a mill location can be traced back to 1369. The main building of the industrial mill is on an island between the Saale and its branches, as are some of the outbuildings.

history

A mill at the current location is first mentioned in a document in 1369. The Wettin margravine Katharina bought the mill, at that time still Pulsschützmühle, from the Beuditz monastery and donated it to the Pforta monastery . Prince Wilhelm the Brave brought the mill back into Wettin possession in 1457, where it remained until 1830. In order to be able to operate the mill, a mill ditch and a weir were built, so that the Herrenmühlen lock had to be built to make the Saale navigable . The mills in this place were destroyed and rebuilt during various wars. So is a new building in 1668, which was built on the remains of a mill from 1593. In 1696 the mill was expanded until it had flour aisles and an oil mill at the beginning of the 18th century. The manufacturer Lautenschläger acquired the mill in 1863. During the GDR era, the mill belonged to the VEB Mühlenwerk. The five-story grinding mill burned down in 1957 and was rebuilt. Today the Herrenmühle is a privately owned hydroelectric power station .

Naming

The name Herrenmühle is not an unusual name for old mills or for mills at centuries-old mill locations. The name mostly refers to the earlier affiliation of the mill to a ruler's seat, the lords.
