Ruler of Olympus - Zeus (also: Zeus: Ruler of Olympus) is a computer game by the manufacturer Sierra Entertainment . The building game takes the player back to ancient Greece, where he is supposed to build a functioning city-state.

Gameplay

The skillful production and distribution of goods, trading with other peoples, worshiping gods, and building supply buildings for neighborhoods are just a few aspects to consider.

Urban planning

Several resources are available to the player on a given map. In addition to food, the player can, depending on the card, also have various options for dismantling and adding. For example, sheep and goats can be kept on fertile land or copper can be extracted from ore-bearing rock. In order to process these resources, the player needs workers that he can lure into the city with apartments (ordinary for workers, upscale apartments for nobles).

The residents of the apartments demand goods for the expansion (all: food, wool, olive oil; noblemen: wine, weapons, horses), which they consume continuously (except for weapons and horses). A supply of culture ( high schools , podiums , theater and hippodrome ) is also required. Unlike in similar games, it is not enough to have a supply building nearby. The buildings like the Agora send employees to take care of the supply.

The extraction and cultivation of resources is also carried out by workers. The goods are stored in silos (food) and warehouses. The player must keep an eye on the logistics of the goods so that, for example, the food can also get from the silo via the agora to the apartments.

If the residents are dissatisfied, vandalism and robberies will result. The residents can also get sick. If the buildings are not maintained by architects, they will collapse after a while or simply burn down.

military

As a city-state, there is a possibility of being attacked by rivals. In this case, the city's troops can be called to arms. They then march from the apartments to the marked location on the playing map to defend the city. If there are no nobles in the city who provide a powerful army, the normal population will have to take up arms, causing the economy to lose workforce. It is possible to build walls and towers that will give the city some protection. You can also ask the allied cities for auxiliary troops.

You can attack your rivals, call allies to arms and let heroes in the city go to war with you. From this battle, however, you only learn the result, without being able to influence the battle, apart from the warriors sent.

Trade and politics

The player can trade with allied cities, vassals and colonies . For this you have to set up a trading post or pier for the respective city. This collects and distributes goods autonomously according to the player's export and import specifications, as long as the maximum trading volume of these goods per city is not exceeded.

There are five different types of cities. Allies, rivals, vassals, colonies and distant cities. You can trade with any city except with rivals. Allied cities can cancel the trade if they are dissatisfied with the player, for example because they recently attacked another or precisely this city or did not meet their demands. Vassals and colonies can pay tribute in the form of goods or drachmas . Allies and rivals can be conquered militarily and thus made vassals. If you want to gain respect in the eyes of the other cities, you can give them gifts or attack an enemy. Winning games ( Olympic Games , Nemean Games , ...) has a positive effect on the whole world, as does the building of Zeus' temple. You can also receive gifts from friendly cities if they appreciate you very much.

Myths

The myths of Greece play a relatively large role in this game. Gods come to town and run around the map. A temple can be built for gods who are benevolent. In return, the gods come to the city, bless buildings, bring their own army units / monsters with them and allow themselves to be carried away with gifts that can be requested in the temple. Enemy gods, however, come into the city, curse or destroy buildings and release monsters that have to be slain by heroes. If a well-meaning God is present, they fight each other. Heroes like Hercules or Odysseus can also be lured into the city. These fight monsters independently, defend the city, perform small services for the gods or go to war for the player. If none of this is necessary, they patrol the city, like the guards.

graphic

Similar to Caesar III , the player observes the events from a bird's eye view. Epidemics, unemployed people, riots, attacks, monsters and the expansion of buildings are graphically represented as well as the workers. You can view the map and buildings from four directions. The mini-map can be filtered according to certain criteria (military, supply, sales, trade, ...) in order to find weak points. It is not possible to zoom in or out of the action.

Rulers of Atlantis: Poseidon is a building game and official add-on for Rulers of Olympus - Zeus, which was released in September 2001 by Sierra Entertainment . The setting of the game is the fictional city of Atlantis (in the game located on an island in the Atlantic between Central America and the Strait of Gibraltar ) and the ancient Mediterranean area.

Differences from the main game

Apart from small adjustments, such as the roof color of the houses, the graphic design remained unchanged. The cultural institutions were replaced by scientific buildings. The military units have also been revised, making the triremes into frigates , for example . Aside from the minor revisions, there are also new elements in the game. Black marble and orichalkos are now degradable. The latter is also important for making weapons and is used as an Atlantic fire on triremes and towers. Olympus has two new gods ( Hera & Atlas ) and the monsters and heroes have also grown. Analogous to the stronghold of Zeus, Poseidon gets his own citadel in this extension.

An adventure editor is also included with the extension, with which it is possible to create your own scenarios and to exchange them with others.
