The First Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom is a building game , which in October 2002 by Sierra Entertainment was released. The gameplay is similar to the previous Caesar III from the Caesar series and can be seen as a further development of Pharaoh and Zeus . A special feature of this part of the ancient game series by Impression Games is the multiplayer that was built in for the first time. The control of the structure of a city from the isometric perspective has remained the same . The setting of the game is the Chinese Empire and its neighboring regions in the period from 2000 BC. Until the incursion of Genghis Khan in 1211 AD.

Game setup

The game consists of seven individual campaigns with a total of 48 individual missions. However, it is also possible to create your own game or play against several players. The campaigns span from the beginning of the Xia dynasty (2033 BC) to the end of the Song / Jin dynasty (1211 AD). The player must first build small villages that have only minor infrastructural challenges. In the course of the game, the cities and the associated planning of a functioning trade, military defense and efficient urban structures become more complex, time-consuming and challenging. In advanced missions it is also possible to erect large monuments such as the Great Wall of China , the Great Canal or extensive tombs ( terracotta army , imperial tombs).

The process of a single mission is also very reminiscent of its predecessor. The player starts with a certain amount of play money, with which it is possible for him to build simple houses, streets, markets and first manufacturing companies. Their goods can be sold in the city or to other cities, but for this it is necessary to open trade routes for money via a world map menu. A functioning trade can now also finance military units ( infantry , archers , cavalry ), monuments, city walls, upscale residential areas and the import of luxury goods.

particularities

Four religions coexist peacefully in the game: ancestor worship , Buddhism , Confucianism and Daoism . If the player manages to increase the happiness of the gods by building many temples of the respective religion and organizing festivals, heroic figures (e.g. Xiwangmu , Sun Tsu , Bodhidharma ) appear who make the city happy with special events.

In some missions it is necessary to “catch” exotic animals from the Middle Kingdom and neighboring regions for the city governor's garden. These include panda bears , crocodiles , tigers , antelopes , and gazelles .

Special commodities in the game are Chinese lacquer art , tea , porcelain and jade carvings , which only occur in ancient China.
