Herschel is a village in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa . It is located in Senqu Township in Joe Gqabi District .
The place is 19 kilometers north of Lady Gray , east of Aliwal North and near the border with Lesotho . In 2011 it had 2,189 inhabitants. It was founded in 1879 and named after the astronomer Sir John Herschel , who lived in the Cape Colony from 1834 to 1838 . Until 1994 it was in an exclave of the nominally independent homeland Transkei .
Herschel is on the R392 road that connects Lady Gray with Sterkspruit .
