Sterkspruit is a city in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa . It is located in Senqu Township in Joe Gqabi District . The place is about 65 kilometers northeast of Aliwal North (80 kilometers by car) and about 25 kilometers from the vicinity of the border with Lesotho . The place has 1,893 inhabitants (2011 census). Several townships belong to the place .
The name is Afrikaans and means "strong tributary". Sterkspruit and its surroundings have long been part of the Homeland Transkei as an exclave . With the dissolution of the Homeland, Sterkspruit also came to the Eastern Cape Province.
Sterkspruit is on the R393 road which connects Lady Gray in the southwest with Quthing in the east. The R726 branches off north of Sterkspruit towards Zastron .
