Zastron is a city in the South African province of Free State . It is located in the municipality of Mohokare , whose administrative seat it is, in the district of Xhariep .

geography

Zastron has 1893 inhabitants (2011 census). To the east is the township of Matlakeng with 13,714 inhabitants. The most common spoken in Matlakeng and Zastron are Sesotho , Afrikaans and isiXhosa . Zastron is located east of the 2207 meter high Aasvoëlberg, named after the Cape vultures that live there . To the east of the city there are also mountains over 2000 meters high. Zastron is located around 30 kilometers southwest of Lesotho .

history

The area was inhabited by San , who left numerous rock paintings in the surrounding sandstone caves . 1838 settled for the first time Bure Jan de Winnaar with his family at the site of today's city, but several times after fights with the Basotho under Moshoeshoe I. was expelled. In 1869 the area finally belonged to the Orange Free State. De Winnaar founded the farm Verliesfontein (roughly: "Source of Loss"). Zastron was founded on the farm in 1876 and named after the maiden name of the wife of the then President of the Orange Free State , Johannes Henricus Brand . It was not until 1881 that the place received municipal status, as the neighboring town of Rouxville refused to do so for a long time.

Economy and Transport

The main source of income is agriculture.

Zastron is located on the R26 , which runs from Rouxville in the west parallel to the Lesotho border to the north, and on the R726, which leads to Sterkspruit . Another road leads to Mohale's Hoek in Lesotho. Zastron lies on the disused railway line ( Burgersdorp -) Dreunberg - Aliwal North - Zastron - Sannaspos (- Bloemfontein ).
