Hertha (also Herta ) is a female given name .

Origin and meaning

The first name, which appeared in Germany towards the end of the 19th century, was probably due to the fact that the name of the Germanic deity Nerthus , about which Tacitus reports, was misread.

popularity

In the first two decades of the 20th century, the name Herta (Hertha) was often among the ten most frequently given girl names of the respective year in Germany. Its popularity declined sharply from the mid-thirties, and since the late forties only a few girls have been called Herta.
