Herwig Karzel

Herwig Karzel (born March 17, 1925 in Bielitz , Silesia, † July 29, 2001 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian Evangelical Lutheran theologian . From 1980 to 1990 he was Superintendent of the Evangelical Superintendent of Upper Austria .

Life

Herwig Karzel had three siblings, one of his brothers later worked as a religion teacher. His father was the second pastor in Bielitz until 1945. Karzel took part in the Second World War as a member of the Air Force . After the war, his family was one of the Silesian expellees .

Karzel studied Protestant theology at the University of Vienna and the University of Heidelberg . He completed his vicariate from 1950 to 1951 in Thening and in Ried im Innkreis . There he worked as a pastor from 1953 to 1958. He was then a pastor in Braunau am Inn from 1958 to 1965 . In 1966, Bishop Gerhard May introduced him to the position of head of the Evangelical Preachers' Seminar in Vienna , the so-called Theodor-Zöckler-House. In 1980, Herwig Karzel succeeded Leopold Temmel as the eleventh superintendent of the Evangelical Superintendent AB Upper Austria. During his term of office, which lasted until 1990, he sought ecumenical dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church . Herwig Karzel was buried in Vienna.
