history

The church was built thanks to a foundation by Eugenia Kreitz, who inherited her fortune from her father Hubertus Kreitz . He had been a watch manufacturer in Saint Petersburg , where he had made fortune, and spent his retirement in Wiesbaden-Biebrich. Here he devoted considerable funds to the Catholic parish of St. Mary .

In the middle of the 19th century, industrialization , which also included Biebrich, led to an increase in the number of Catholics. For this reason, in addition to the existing St. Mary's Church , another church building was necessary. On 22 September 1898, the new church from Limburg bishop was Dominikus Willi ordained and received in accordance with the wishes of the founder's name Sacred Heart of Jesus .

In addition to the church, Eugenia Kreitz donated a parsonage and a sexton's house , a kindergarten and an old people's home as well as her villa, which was later converted into a nurses' home , for the parish .

architecture

The church was built as a neo-Gothic brick building in the shape of a cross and faces east. It comprises a single nave and a transept as well as a tower with an octagonal upper floor and a cone point as the west end . It is 45 meters long and 12 meters wide. The height of the ship to the vault is 13.70 meters, the height of the cruise ship is 15.30 m. With a width of 12 m, the arch of the vault was considered to be the most widely spanned of all single-nave churches in Germany.

The interior of the building was also originally designed in a neo-Gothic style. In 1955 the first renovation took place, which also served to remove the last war damage. The interior was designed according to contemporary tastes. The windows of the chancel, which had been destroyed in the war, were replaced by new motif windows, the middle window was bricked up due to strong glare.

As part of another renovation between 1990 and 1991, attempts were made to restore the original neo-Gothic elements as much as possible. For this purpose, whitewashed wall paintings were restored according to the old templates. The high altar was replaced by a retable (panel with tabernacle ) made by the sculptor Hubert Elsässer . Alsatian also restored the crucifixion group .

In an open chapel - at the back of the church - the Pietà was set up in 1955 . It was dedicated to the memory of the fallen and victims of both world wars.

The church forms, together with the associated rectory and sexton's house, a protected individual monument according to §2 Hessian Monument Protection Act.
