The Church of the Heart of Jesus was the Catholic church in Katlenburg , a district of the municipality of Katlenburg-Lindau in the Northeim district in Lower Saxony . Most recently it belonged to the parish of the Visitation of Mary , based in Northeim , in the Nörten-Osterode deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church was named after the Sacred Heart of Jesus and was located in Kirchweg 2. Today, the nearest Catholic church is four kilometers away in Lindau.

history

Since the Reformation introduced in 1534 , the residents of Katlenburg were largely Protestant. Only in 1943/44 were Catholics temporarily living in large numbers again in Katlenburg; they were evacuees from the area of Aachen . At that time Katlenburg belonged to the parish in Lindau . After the number of Catholics in Katlenburg and the surrounding area had increased significantly as a result of the Second World War due to refugees and displaced persons, Catholic services were initially held in inns or in the Protestant St. John's Church, and the Lindau-Land parish church was founded. In addition to Katlenburg, it included the villages of Berka , Dorste , Elvershausen , Gillersheim , Marke , Suterode and Wachenhausen .

In 1956, the Herz-Jesu-Kirche was built near Osteroder Strasse; it initially belonged to the parish of St. Peter and Paul , based in Lindau. The work was accompanied by numerous personal contributions by the residents and local companies. The former brickworks located in Wulften delivered 700 bricks, further donations came from business people and Protestant residents; a total of 8,640 hours of voluntary work were done. On December 22nd, 1956, the church was consecrated by the provost from Duderstadt , Franz Ernst. In 1957 pews and a small bell were purchased. It was not until 1976 that the Herz Jesu got a local pastor, for which the diocese of Hildesheim acquired a residential building at 19 Am Sterthagen . On March 1, 2004, the Lindau parish of St. Peter and Paul with the Herz-Jesu-Kirche moved from the then dissolved deanery Gieboldehausen-Lindau to the newly founded deanery Untereichsfeld. On November 1st, 2006 the church moved from the parish of St. Peter and Paul in Lindau to the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Northeim, and thus from the deanery in Untereichsfeld to the deanery in Nörten-Osterode.

On July 25th, 2009 the profanation by Bishop Norbert Trelle took place . The church building was sold and has been used as a dance studio since February 2010 . The Way of the Cross found a new place in Renshausen in 2013 . The reason for the closure was found in the poor community development. The number of people attending church services has steadily decreased since the 1990s; in the summer of 2009 only 30 people were still present. This year there were 510 Catholics registered in Katlenburg, Berka, Suterode, Wachenhausen and Elvershausen.

Architecture and equipment

The simple hall church, located around 136 meters above sea level , was built according to plans by the architect Georg Lippsmeier, it had a small bell tower and 120 seats. In the course of time, its equipment has been supplemented and partially renewed several times.
