Duchy of Sprottau

The Duchy of Sprottau existed from 1251 to 1397 as part of the Duchy of Glogau , which in 1331 became a fiefdom of the Crown of Bohemia and in the same year was separated into a royal Bohemian part and a ducal part. It was ruled by the Silesian Piasts . The place of residence was the city of the same name Sprottau (today Szprotawa in the Lubusz Voivodeship in Poland).

When the Duchy of Silesia was divided in 1249/51, the Sprottau area came to the Duchy of Glogau, which was built for Duke Konrad II . From 1251 he also dubbed Duke von Sprottau . After his death in 1273/74, the Duchy of Glogau was divided among his three sons. The middle Primislaus / Premko I. received Sprottau and Steinau . Together with his brother Heinrich III. († 1309) he supported the Breslau Duke Heinrich IV. In his fight against the Polish Duke Władysław I. Ellenlang and was killed in 1289 near Kraków. His younger brother Heinrich III inherited his property, who was named Duke of Sprottau from 1289 until his death in 1309 . Afterwards Sprottau was reunited with Glogau.

After the death of Duke Heinrich V "the Iron" of Glogau and Steinau in 1369, his three sons inherited the Duchy of Glogau and Steinau and divided the area. Sprottau with Freystadt and Grünberg received the youngest brother Heinrich VIII. "Sperling" . After his accidental death in a horse show in 1397, Sprottau was associated with the ducal part of Glogau, with which it shared its further history.
