The Hessian Watchmaking School ( HUS for short ) is a master school and advanced training school for the watchmaking trade.

history

The school was founded in Frankfurt am Main in 1951 by Karl Geitz as a state specialist class for watchmakers at the Heinrich Kleyer School and built up under difficult conditions. It was a part-time vocational school and carried out the accompanying vocational school lessons for Hessian craft and industrial companies.

In order to further improve the conditions and to be able to meet the requirements of a modern watchmaker's training, the then headmaster Jürgen Jenschke founded the Hessische Uhrmacherschule (FHUS eV) support group together with Karl Geitz and some other teachers and guild members . With the help of the support group, modern mechanical and electronic workshop equipment could be procured, with which all contents and areas of today's watchmaking can be covered.

The FHUS eV is the sponsor of the master craftsman and advanced training school, which provided the workshop equipment to the vocational school. In return, the vocational school left the premises for the master school to share for further training.

This collaboration ended in 2003 when the state watchmaker class at the vocational school was closed. The continuing education branch was retained, but had to look for new premises.

In 2004 the HUS moved into the rooms of the "Rörshain" house in the Hessenpark open-air museum . The result was a new cooperation between the museum and the school, which combines old craft traditions and modern watch technology. The house opposite from Laubach contains a collection of tower clocks .

The school is nicknamed the Karl Geitz School in honor of its founder.

Advanced training courses

The Hessian Watchmaking School is the only watchmaking school in Germany to offer extra-occupational training courses.

Master watchmaker

Further training courses are offered in all four areas of the master craftsman's examination . The on-site examination board can accept all parts of the master craftsman's examination, so that an external examination is not necessary.

Certified restorer in the watchmaking trade

The advanced training course covers topics from art and cultural history , monument preservation and monument protection as well as profession-specific subject areas. Practical instructions on historical techniques are given that take into account the overall importance of working on historical objects.

Watch seminars

Since 1999 the school has offered some advanced seminars for both watchmakers and watch enthusiasts as part of advanced training. The open attitude under the motto: "Further training for everyone" was shaped by Karel M. Kolar and has aroused great interest in the watchmaking profession. The seminars are held on weekends so that professional watchmakers can participate.

The building

The Zeigerichsmühle, built in 1799, has been in the Hessenpark open-air museum in Neu-Anspach in the Hochtaunus district since 1986 . Thanks to this implementation, the Rörshain mill , which had since become very dilapidated , was preserved as a monument . Today the house is used as the Hessian watchmaking school.

Watchmaker in Hessenpark

A specialist workshop for the repair of large clocks has been located in the building of the Hessian Watchmaking School since August 1st, 2019. The operators are the two watchmakers Oliver Hambel and Joshua Becker. The watchmaker's workshop in Hessenpark and the FHUS eV work closely together and develop the school together.
