The Hessian Athletics Association (HLV for short) is the organization of athletics clubs in the state of Hesse and was founded on February 2, 1947 in Frankfurt am Main . The HLV is one of 20 regional associations in the German Athletics Association (DLV) and is divided into 26 circles. In total (as of 2018) it has around 97,500 members in 899 associations.

Organization and structure

The tasks are carried out on a voluntary basis by 16 members of the executive committee, 36 association council members and countless employees in the 26 districts. In addition to the HLV Presidium, the bodies include the Association Council and the Association Committees for Competitive Sports, Youth and Law.

The office, which was once run by Paul Ceynowa on a voluntary basis in his private apartment in Frankfurt, is now located with seven full-time employees in the House of Sports of the State Sports Association of Hesse in Frankfurt am Main. In addition, the competitive sports advisor and three other regional trainers work full-time for competitive sports.

The Hessian Athletics Association was founded on February 2, 1947. 69 participants from 65 associations elected Max Danz as their first chairman on behalf of 30,000 registered members .

The first German men's and women's championships (1946) were held in Hesse after the war. This was followed by the premieres in the forest run and DMM final fight (1947), in the hall (1954), the seniors (1972) and most recently in the throwing pentathlon (2003). The first women's European Cup final took place in Kassel in 1965. Overall, the Hessian Athletics Association has held over 100 German championships, 30 international competitions and five IAAF and EEA events over the past 60 years.

Prominent athletes

With Armin Hary (FSV Frankfurt) and Christiane Krause (ASC Darmstadt), Hessian clubs presented two Olympic champions. Birgit Friedmann (Eintracht Frankfurt) became the first female athletics world champion from the HLV . Hammer thrower Betty Heidler (LG Eintracht Frankfurt) celebrated the same success in 2007 . Germany's most prominent athlete for years, Harald Schmid (TV Gelnhausen), won five European championships. Hessian athletes set more than 60 German records. They won over 1200 national titles in different age groups (excluding seniors).
