The Heterochaenia are a genus of plants in the bellflower family (Campanulaceae). The four or so species all occur only on the island of Réunion .

Vegetative characteristics

Heterochaenia species are shrubs . The sessile leaves are arranged in groups at the upper ends of the branches.

Generative characteristics

The stalked flowers are in terminal racemose or paniculate inflorescences .

The relatively large, hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five sepals are fused. The five purple, blue or yellow-white petals are fused bell-shaped. The corolla lobes are as long as or longer than the corolla tube. The stamens of the stamens are separate from each other, the base is slender. The anthers are just as long as the stamens. The three-chamber ovary is covered with a five-fold indented, disc-shaped nectarium .

The triple capsule fruits jump up from the upper end in folds.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Heterochaenia was established in 1839 by Alphonse Pyrame de Candolle in Prodromus Systematis Naturalis Regni Vegetabilis , 7, 2, page 441. Type species is Heterochaenia ensifolia (Lam.) A.DC.

Within the genus Heterochaenia , four species are distinguished, all of which only occur on the island of Réunion :
