The Heuglin weaver ( Ploceus heuglini ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of the bunting weaver ( Ploceus ).

The Latin additional species refers to Theodor von Heuglin .

The bird is found in Africa in Burkina Faso , Democratic Republic of the Congo , Ivory Coast , Gambia , Cameroon , Kenya , Mali , Niger , Nigeria , Senegal , South Sudan , Chad , Uganda, and Central African Republic .

The distribution area includes tree-lined savannah , thickets on coasts, habitats around farms and villages from 650 to 1800 m altitude.

features

The species is 13 cm tall and weighs between 21 and 28 g. The male has golden yellow on the forehead and crown in the brood plumage, the neck is yellow-greenish, the slightly spotted upper side and the wing covers are olive-green with indicated stripes. The rump is light yellowish. The male resembles the Somali weaver ( Ploceus spekei ), but is slightly smaller, the black face mask tapers to a point on the chest, the iris is pale yellow. In the plain dress, the plumage is monochrome olive-green on the upper side and continuously yellow on the underside. The female resembles that of the Somali weaver, but is less strongly striped.

The species is monotypical .

voice

The singing of the male is described as simple, monotonous, but long-lasting chant with increasing "swi" or "chukakakakaka" followed by nasal "zhee hzee hzee" very similar to the red-headed cistus singer ( Cisticola chiniana ).

Way of life

The diet consists mainly of arthropods including spiders , caterpillars , beetles and dragonflies .

The breeding season is in August in Senegal, between July and October in Mali, between March and July in Ghana, August and September in Togo, May and September in Benin. This species breeds in small colonies and moves to other habitats after the breeding business has ended.

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
