Hexamethylpentane is a symmetrically built aliphatic hydrocarbon and one of 159 structural isomers of undecane . The compound contains three quaternary carbon atoms, the middle carbon atom being substituted with two methyl and two tert- butyl groups . The connection was first described in 1983 by Christoph Rüchardt .
presentation
The representation can be obtained by reaction of 2-chloro-2,3,3-trimethylbutane with tert -butyllithium or advantageously by hydrogenation of 1,1-di (1,1-dimethylethyl) cyclopropane effected. The latter synthesis took place at 50 ° C. with a yield of 69%, so the compound is quite stable despite its very dense substitution on the backbone. The substance was obtained as a colorless, glass-like solid with a melting point of 64-66 ° C.
