Hieracium argutum is a kind from the family of the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is native to California.

description

Hieracium argutum is an herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. The upright stems are mostly bare, but can occasionally be covered with fine and coarse, star-shaped hairs that are between 1 and 5 millimeters long. The base of the stem is either hairless or star-shaped.

At the base of the stem there are seven to twelve, occasionally more or no basal leaves , while one to eight leaves branch off from the stem. The leaf blade is at a length of 6 to 20 centimeters and a width of 0.8 to 4.5 centimeters upside-lanceolate about spatelartig to lanceolate-linear shaped. The base of the spreader is wedge-shaped, while the tip of the spreader tapers and the edges of the spreader are usually finely serrated. Both the top and the underside of the leaves are covered with fine, coarse hairs 1 to 5 millimeters long.

The flowering period extends from June to October. The total inflorescences consist of twelve to forty arranged panicle- like, cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The inflorescence stem is usually covered with star-shaped hair, but occasionally also hairy glandular. The more or less bell-shaped to inverted cone-shaped involucre becomes 0.7 to 0.9 centimeters long and between 0.5 and 0.6 centimeters wide. It contains 13 to 21 hairy, rarely bald bracts on the underside . The flower heads contain 15 to 30 yellow ray florets , which are 0.8 to 1 centimeter long. The black achenes are columnar with a length of 2.5 to 4 millimeters. They have a papus , which is composed of 40 to 60 white bristle hairs.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The natural range of Hieracium argutum is in North America. It includes the eastern and western mountain regions of California.
