Hieracium bolanderi is a plant from the genus of hawkweed ( Hieracium ) within the family of Compositae (Asteraceae). It is common in western North America.

Vegetative characteristics

Hieracium bolanderi is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 60 centimeters. The upright stems are bare or have little hair.

At the base of the stem there are five to nine, occasionally more basal leaves , while there are no or up to three leaves on the stem. The leaf blade is at a length 3.5 to 9.5 centimeters and a width of 1.2 to 2.5 centimeters upside-lanceolate to spatulate with wedge-shaped Spreitenbasis and rounded or tapered Spreitenspitze. The margins of the spread are whole. The underside of the leaf is bald or covered with fine, rough hairs 5 to 8 millimeters long, while the upper side of the leaf is always hairy.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from April to July. The panicle-like total inflorescence usually contains about 15 (3 to more than 40) cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The inflorescence shaft is hairy or glabrous. The rare for a diameter of 0.7, usually 0.9 to 1 centimeters to bell-shaped cylindrical involucre containing 8 to 13 glandular hairs on the underside of bracts . The flower heads contain six to twelve ray-flowers. The yellow ray florets are 0.85 to 1 centimeter long.

The achenes are jug-shaped with a length of 5 to 5.5 millimeters. They have a papus , which is composed of 50 to 60 straw-colored to reddish brown bristle hairs.

Occurrence

The natural range of Hieracium bolanderi is in western North America. It stretches across the US states of Oregon and California to the Mexican state of Baja California .

Hieracium bolanderi thrives at altitudes of 300 to 1700 meters above serpentine in pine and fir forests as well as in evergreen mixed forests.

Taxonomy

It was first described as Hieracium bolanderi in 1868 by Asa Gray in Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , Volume 7, Number 2, Pages 365-366. A synonym for Hieracium bolanderi A.Gray is Hieracium siskiyouense M.Peck .
