Course of the Highwood River

The Highwood River is a 170 km long right tributary of the Bow River in the southwest of the Canadian province of Alberta .

River course

The headwaters of the Highwood River are located in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park in the Canadian Rockies, not far from the North American continental divide . The Highwood River rises in the Misty Range on the northwest flank of Mount Arethusa ( 2896  m ) at about 2500  m . The 2206  m high Highwood Pass separates the headwaters from the adjacent catchment area of the Kananaskis River to the north . The Highwood River initially flows 40 km south through the mountains. Then he cuts through a ridge in an easterly direction and reaches the prairie . The Alberta Highway 40 follows the first 40 kilometers of the upper reaches of the Highwood River. The Alberta Highway 541 then runs along the river to Longview , which the Highwood River reaches after 85 km. The river now flows in a predominantly northeastern direction. The Pekisko Creek joins the Highwood River after another 11 km from the south. 47 km above the mouth, the Highwood River passes the small town of High River . At High River, some of the river water is diverted south to the Little Bow River for irrigation purposes . East of Okotoks , 14 km before it flows into the Bow River, the Sheep River , the most important tributary, meets the Highwood River when coming from the west. The mouth of the Highwood River is 19 miles southeast of downtown Calgary .

Hydrology
