Hilde Eisler

Hilde Eisler (born January 28, 1912 in Tarnopol ( Galicia ) as Brunhilde Rothstein ; † October 8, 2000 in Berlin ) was a German journalist of Jewish origin and long-time editor-in-chief of the popular GDR magazine Das Magazin .

Hilde Eisler born Brunhilde Rothstein comes from a merchant family and grew up in Frankfurt am Main . She learned to be a bookseller . In 1930 she moved to Berlin, where she worked for Marx-Engels-Verlag until 1934 . In 1931 she became a member of the KPD . In 1934/35 she worked illegally as a courier for the KPD between Germany and Switzerland and was therefore arrested in 1935 and sentenced to one year in prison. Subsequently expelled to Poland, she emigrated to France in 1937 . During the Spanish Civil War she worked on the German freedom broadcaster 29.8 . She later went to the USA . There she married the journalist and politician Gerhart Eisler , the brother of the composer Hanns Eisler . In the McCarthy era , Gerhart Eisler came under suspicion of espionage, but was able to flee to Germany via London in 1949 on board the Batory . The US police then arrested Hilde Eisler, but had to release her after six weeks. Before her departure, she made a statement, which the New York Times printed in full the following day.

After her return she was one of the founders of the weekly mail . The editor-in-chief of the magazine Das Magazin was taken over by Hilde Eisler in 1955. She succeeded in making the paper one of the most popular press products in the GDR, in which - disguised as letters to the editor - critical voices were also heard. In 1979 she left the editor-in-chief, but remained associated with the magazine until her death. Her grave is in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee .

On the occasion of her 75th birthday in 1987, she was awarded the Gold Medal for the Patriotic Order of Merit . In 1982 she received the Karl Marx Order .
