Help

Spontaneous help when crossing a mountain stream

Help in the sense of helpfulness is part of the cooperation in interpersonal relationships. It is used to improve a recognized deficiency or a situation in need of change or an emergency. The help is either preceded by a request from the person in need or an independent decision by those willing to help.

The determination of the extent of the need for assistance and the appropriate aids can differ little or significantly between the parties concerned. The situation can be overestimated as well as underestimated. The causes are mostly to be found in the competence of the helper, but also in the judgment of the person in need. For example, the judgment of a seriously ill person can be as severely weakened as their general condition . In return, the helper may not be able to cope with the situation or not enough.

From this it becomes clear that a “right to help”, as it is viewed in most societies as an obvious “ unwritten law ”, is not synonymous with “right to improvement”. After all, there are too many subjective disruptive factors that can stand in the way of effective help. In the traditional and experienced helping professions ( medical professions , health professions ), “ helping people to help themselves” has therefore established itself as an effective and realistic concept.

Ethical , moral and religious foundations

Many people see help not just as a natural duty, but as a task that follows from their faith . Here the conscience tends to follow a society-independent authority. Quite a few offers of help are supported by religious institutions or special ideological splinter groups. Some of them forbid their followers from socially agreed and traditional offers of help.

Help as a system-preserving factor

Help is a wanted cooperation especially when it promotes the continued existence of a system . This cooperation, known as symbiosis ( coexistence ), compensates for a deficiency that can not be overcome on its own through interaction without directly attaching conditions to this action . There is an immediate dependency here, which can be described as “help for self-preservation”, because it arises neither from a convention nor from a conscience. However, even here mutual help is no guarantee of continued existence. Both changed external circumstances and immanent changes can force the system to dissolve.

This problem is somewhat mitigated if there are several systems with one another. It is in the nature of the systems that they provide the necessary tools (activities, resources, energy, etc.). So the helping system transfers to the affected system. It follows that a compensation must be created in the help system for the services provided. Otherwise this would be consumed by further such cooperation . This special (unbalanced) situation is therefore also stressful for the help system. Under certain circumstances, you may even need help later (see also: helper syndrome ). Depending on the degree of the emergency situation, it is therefore necessary to network or link a number of securing and supplementary help points. Conversely, each (networked) system can also be seen as mutually assisting instances that guarantee the continuation of the whole .

Types and forms of help

With Art is meant what purpose pursues the help. The form (in brackets) indicates who or what is providing the help or what it consists of. The most common forms are money , food, and clothing . They are no longer mentioned separately.
