Maria Hiltrudis Schnabel (* 1900 in Großwallstadt , † April 26, 1984 in Huntingdon Valley , Pennsylvania ) was a German nun. From 1959 to 1969 she was Superior General of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Savior .

Career

Schnabel attended the secondary school for girls. At the age of 18 she joined the Congregation of the Sisters of the Savior in Würzburg and worked under the supervision of Paul Manasse in the Department of Otolaryngology and Throat Medicine at the Luitpold Hospital . She was then sent to Philadelphia , where she was last superior of the Drueding Infirmary , a factory-owned hospital.

In 1951 she succeeded Sister Maria Hernelda Reinhard in the office of Commissioner of the Congregation in the United States. In 1959 she was elected Superior General of the Congregation at the motherhouse in Würzburg as the successor to Gundulfa Schöpf . She remained in office for two terms until 1969. Under her leadership, a mission station was opened in Nanyamba ( Tanzania ) in 1960 . In 1963 the congregation was placed under papal jurisdiction . She also implemented the reforms after the Second Vatican Council within the Congregation during her term of office.

The Würzburg bishop Josef Stangl brought her to the diocese's council of bishops in 1969. In 1971 she returned to the United States, where she served as a chaplain at Holy Redeemer Hospital in Meadowbrook.
