The Hindemith Foundation (French: Fondation Hindemith ) is a foundation that looks after the artistic legacy of Paul Hindemith . Its headquarters are in Blonay in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland .

History of the foundation

Paul Hindemith's widow and heiress Gertrud Hindemith stated in her will of December 4, 1966: "Our entire inheritance should be converted into a Hindemith Foundation." She commissioned a group of twelve friends to set up the foundation.

Gertrud Hindemith died on March 13, 1967 in Vevey (Canton of Vaud). The friends named in her will met on December 10 and 11, 1967 in Vevey, elected a five-member board of trustees from among their number and appointed Blonay to be the seat of the foundation. The first board of trustees consisted of Arno Volk , President (Mainz); Karl Herbert Schober , Vice President (Brussels / Vienna); Marius Décombaz (Vevey); Philipp Mohler (Frankfurt) and Heinrich Straumann (Zurich).

The founding deed was signed by the members of the Board of Trustees on June 10, 1968, and the articles of association became legally binding on July 8, 1968, when it was entered in the Swiss Commercial Register, Vevey office. The foundation was recognized by the Federal Department of the Interior by resolution of August 9, 1968 and is subject to federal supervision.

The Hindemith Foundation established the Hindemith Institute in Frankfurt in 1974 and founded the Hindemith Music Center in Blonay in 1978 . Its office is located on the area of ​​the Hindemith Music Center in the “Maison Marius Décombaz”. The foundation's property also includes the Hindemiths' former home in Blonay, Villa La Chance, which can be viewed on request.

The Hindemith Foundation Blonay is administered by a board of trustees, which is supplemented by elections and elects a president from among its members to implement its resolutions. The foundation board determines all work and activities of the foundation, administers its assets and decides on the use of the income within the framework of the foundation's purpose.

The current Board of Trustees consists of the following members: Andreas Eckhardt (President), François Margot (Vice President), Christian Höppner , Andreas Schober, Tabea Zimmermann , Andres Briner (honorary member, † 2014), Hans-Dieter Resch (honorary member).

Together with the Rudolf and Erika Koch Foundation, the Walther and Käthe Busche Foundation and Gerhard Trede Foundation, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the State of Schleswig-Holstein have been awarding the Hindemith Prize of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and since 2005 together with the city of Hanau, the Paul Hindemith Prize of the city of Hanau .
