Hindemith Prize
The international Hindemith Prize has been awarded to contemporary composers at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (SHMF) since 1990 .
background
The Hindemith Prize was awarded in 1990 by the Hindemith Foundation (Blonay / Switzerland), the Rudolf and Erika Koch Foundation, the Walther and Käthe Busche Foundation, the Gerhard Trede Foundation, the Franz Wirth Memorial Foundation and the Donated to the cultural authority of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg . The award “is intended to promote outstanding contemporary composers. At the same time, the award is a reminder of the music educational work of Paul Hindemith , who wrote the composition »Plöner Musiktag« in 1932 on behalf of the Plön State Educational Institute. The prize is endowed with 20,000 euros.
The price was originally not a competitive price. In 2010 it was awarded for the first time as part of a composition competition. These were announced by the SHMF and the NDR Radiophilharmonie together with the foundations that have already been awarded the Hindemith Prize. Young composers who must have been born after September 1, 1973 were asked to write a concerto for multipercussion and symphony orchestra . The work of the competition winner was premiered at the SHMF 2010 by the classic drummer Martin Grubinger .
