Hippothoe (daughter of Pelias)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hippothoë ( Greek  Ἱπποθόη ) is in Greek mythology a daughter of Pelias , king of Iolkos , and Anaxibia , daughter of Bias , or Phylomache , daughter of the Iasid Amphion .

She was the sister of Akastos , Peisidike , Pelopeia and Alcestis . Other possible sisters are Amphinome , Euadne, and Medusa.

Together with her sisters, Medea, in the form of a priestess of Artemis , persuaded her to cut her father into small pieces and cook. In this way, Medea told the sisters, Pelias should be rejuvenated. Actually, however, the returned Jason and Medea wanted to take revenge on Pelias for the death of Jason's father Aison , who was driven to suicide by Pelias. Medea conjured up the rejuvenation of an old ram by cooking to the sisters, who were initially negative about the project. Convinced of this spell, the sisters killed their father. Only Alcestis did not take part in the act.

Following another tradition, Aison saw the return of his son Jason and was rejuvenated by Medea in the manner described. But the daughters of Pelias wanted to do the same and so killed their father.
